The European Social Economy demonstrates its quantitative importance and its crucial role in the socio-economic context of the continent

The EURICSE-CIRIEC-S4s report, carried out for the European Commission in the framework of the Social Economy Action Plan, confirms that the social economy encompasses more than 11.5 million workers and 4.3 million active organisations in the EU.

Highlights

National governments from five European countries draft a letter to the Vice-Presidents of the European Commission to ensure Social Economy has adequate representation in the new Commission's structure

Ministers from Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Slovenia joined the initiative led by the Vice-President of the Spanish Government and Minister of Labor and Social Economy, Yolanda Díaz, calling for an adequate representation of the Social Economy in the new structure of the European Commission, as well as for a specific commissioner with responsibilities in the field.

The European Parliament Groups in the new legislature are in favor of renewing the Social Economy Intergroup

This was highlighted at the event organized on October 17 in Brussels by Social Economy Europe (SEE) with MEPs from the European People's Party Group and the European Socialist Group, titled "The Social Economy and the EU’s Objectives 2024-2029." The event also included the presence of high-level representatives from the European Commission. SEE and CEPES President, Juan Antonio Pedreño, emphasized the "essential" need to renew the Social Economy Intergroup and to have a Commissioner with responsibilities to place this business model at the heart of public policies.

The UN presents the report of the Secretary General ‘Promoting the social and solidarity economy for sustainable development’

The report is based on data provided by various entities and organizations, including CIRIEC International, and documents how the social economy contributes to achieve the objectives set out in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and as an effective source of job creation. The report was presented on October 15 in New York, at the event “Unlocking the full potential of the social and solidarity economy for sustainable development”, organized by the United Nations Task Force on Social and Solidarity Economy (UNTFSSE).

Costa Rica hosts the 34th International Congress of CIRIEC, advancing strategies and innovations in the social economy in the context of transitions

Costa Rica hosted the 34th International Congress of CIRIEC on public, social and cooperative economy from October 16 to 18, the main meeting event for the CIRIEC institutional community, made up of agents of the public economy and the social economy, researchers and political decision-makers in twenty countries in Europe, America, Africa and Asia.

The OECD publishes a working paper with fact sheets on the social economy in 34 countries

For this work, information was gathered on official definitions, the number and size of entities, employment patterns, sectors of activity, their economic contribution, and legal frameworks. The document is the result of the OECD Global Action for the “Promotion of Social and Solidarity Economy Ecosystems,” which concluded in 2023.

Central and Eastern Europe CEE Social Economy Forum: boosting finance and cooperation - Vienna, Austria, 7 & 8 November 2024

The European Commission, Directorate-General for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion (DG EMPL), the European Investment Bank (EIB) Advisory Services Department for fi-compass, Erste Group, Impact Europe, Microfinance Centre, European Microfinance Network, and FEBEA are organising the ‘CEE Social Economy Forum: boosting finance and cooperation’ taking place on Friday, 8 November 2024, at the premises of Erste Group in Vienna, Austria. For the first time, this forum will gather policymakers, European Social Fund Plus (ESF+) and experts to discuss the future of the social economy in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE).

B-WISE Final Conference - Brussels, 13 & 14 November

B-WISE aims to bridge the digital skills gap in the Work Integration Social Enterprises (WISEs) sector. In particular, the project targets the skill needs of disadvantaged workers, their support staff (e.g. job coaches), and managers, helping to increase awareness of digital technologies as well as the WISE sector’s attractiveness as a career path. The conference will dive into how B-WISE has addressed these needs to provide cross-European yet localised approaches to skill development, both in terms of soft and digital skills. The event will serve as a platform to discuss the implementation of the European WISE Skills Strategy, and offer policy recommendations. Moreover, participants will discover the tailored training materials developed by the project to enhance the integration of workers with support needs. The conference will take place on 13 November, from 9:30 to 18:00, at the European Economic and Social Committee in Brussels.
