The role of the Social and Solidarity Economy in the socio-ecological transition

"Half a century after the Club of Rome's report calling for the invention of a different development model, the Social and Solidarity Economy is finally emerging as a credible candidate in the eyes of international institutions. Yesterday's green utopia could become tomorrow's reality. Research will be crucial in building the new paradigm we need in this transformative perspective. This is why we have decided to focus the 10th edition of Ciriec's international research conference on the social economy on the "role of the SSE in the socio-ecological transition". This conference will take place in Bordeaux from 27 to 29 October 2025."

4.3 million enterprises and organisations, 11.5 million paid employees and more than 912 billion euros in turnover are the main figures of the social economy in the European Union, according to the report "Benchmarking the socio-economic performance of the EU social economy", which has just been published by the European Commission in the framework of Axis 5 "Enhancing the recognition of the social economy and its potential" of its European Action Plan for the Social Economy adopted in December 2021.

UNTFSSE launches new Working Group on Access and Financial Support to Social Economy Entities
The United Nations Inter-Agency Task Force on Social and Solidarity Economy (UNTFSSE) launched on 4 September the new Task Force on Access and Financial Support to Social and Solidarity Economy Entities, a new collaborative team aimed at promoting the sector worldwide, of which CIRIEC is already a member.

ILO MOOC on the Social Solidarity Economy
The ILO (International Labour Organisation), a specialised agency of the United Nations and a long-standing partner of CIRIEC International, is offering an open-access online course on the Social Solidarity Economy (SSE). This is part of the UNTFSSE (United Nations Inter-Agency Task Force on the Social Solidarity Economy) action plan to raise awareness of the realities and opportunities offered by the SSE.

The Ibero-American Network for the Promotion of the Social and Solidarity Economy (RIFESS) holds its first seminar
The seminar brought together representatives from government institutions in various Ibero-American countries, responsible for promoting the social economy in their respective territories. The Executive Coordination of the Network is led by the National Institute of Social Economy of the Government of Mexico.

34th CIRIEC International Congress - Costa Rica, 16-18 October 2024
The 34th CIRIEC International Congress on Public, Social and Cooperative Economy will take place in Costa Rica, in La Viña del Este, San José, on 16-18 October 2024, organised by UNED Costa Rica and CIRIEC. The theme will be ‘Strategies for territorial and human development’. The event is endorsed by the successful CIRIEC International Congress of Researchers in Social Economy held there in September 2021, with the participation of more than 500 people from 40 countries, including attendees and online participants, and the presentation of 180 papers. CIRIEC's international congresses are key events for the global community interested in the public, social and cooperative economy, as they promote knowledge exchange and international collaboration, and attract participants from all over the world, including representatives from the economic and social world, cooperative and social economy leaders, trade unionists, politicians and representatives of public institutions.

Valencia, Spanish Capital of the Social Economy 2024, will host on 26 and 27 September the 'Congress on Promotion of the Social Economy. Fiscal and Public Policy Instruments', organised by CIRIEC-Spain together with IUDESCOOP-Universitat de València (UV) and CEGEA-Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV). This is an extraordinary congress in the CIRIEC calendar, programmed in the context of the said capital, which will have as its general theme "Public administration and the social economy: allies for an inclusive prosperity". More than 200 people are expected to participate, including university researchers, senior officials and technicians from public administrations and representatives of the cooperative and social economy sector.
