UNTFSSE launches open online course to raise awareness of the Social and Solidarity Economy (SSE) and how it can help to achieve the SDGs

Following the historic adoption by the United Nations General Assembly of the resolution “Promoting the Social and Solidarity Economy for Sustainable Development” (A/RES/77/281) on 18 April 2023, the UNTFSSE has launched an online course that will enable UN Member States and intergovernmental agencies, UN entities, governments and regional organizations to familiarize themselves with the basic concepts and practices of the SSE, and its central role in promoting inclusive and sustainable development.

The course is also aimed at national and regional policy makers, academics and think tanks, development banks, civil society (NGOs, foundations, volunteer groups, etc.), the private sector and the media.

The awareness-raising package has two modules:

  • Module 1 – The SSE as a game changer: understanding the concept and its building blocks
  • Module 2 – The pivotal role of the SSE in advancing inclusive and sustainable development

In module 1 people get an overview of SSE, from key definitions to practical examples from around the world. By the end of Module 1, you will familiarise with the concepts and characteristics of SSE; recognise SSE core values, principles and legal frameworks; understand the different organisational forms of the SSE, and analyse examples of SSE organizations.

Module 2 explores how SSE can contribute to achieving all 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), impacting on the three dimensions of sustainability – environmental, social and economic – and going beyond the more obvious effects on social development.

By the end of Module 2, you will recognise the two-way relationship between SSE and SDGs; understand how SSE organizations can be supported to amplify their impacts; analyse examples of successful SSE/SDGs interconnection, and get an overview of future challenges and opportunities
